Celebrating 100 years of
Montessori Education

The 6th of January 2007 marked 100 years since Dr. Maria Montessori opened the first Casa dei Bambini
in San Lorenzo, Italy. Montessori has been around for 100 years and is going strong, with about 22,000
schools around the world! What was once revolutionary has become a force to be reckoned with.
Modern research into how children learn continues to validate Montessori’s materials and ideas.

Below are some quotes from Dr. Maria Montessori:

"If education is always to be conceived along the same antiquated lines of a mere
transmission of knowledge, there is little to be hoped from it in the bettering of man's
future. For what is the use of transmitting knowledge if the individual's total development
lags behind?"

"Our aim is not merely to make the child understand, and still less to force him to
memorize, but so to touch his imagination as to enthuse him to his innermost core"

"We must help the child to act for himself, will for himself, think for
himself; this is the art of those who aspire to serve the spirit."

" One test of the correctness of educational procedure is the happiness of the child. "
