THE ENVIRONMENT
There is a Chinese proverb that says:
I hear and I forget
I see and I remember
I
I do and I understand
The Montessori environment is designed with the end in mind. It is much more than a classroom.
The entire school is a part of the child's environment, including the adults in it.
-
Montessori classrooms are enriched with developmentally appropriate materials which contain
an abstract concept in material form. They have a built in control of error so the child can
teach himself. The child has the opportunity to use his hands, and develop a love of learning.
- Children are vertically grouped. This means that each classroom is multi-aged, forming a
community of learners assisting and inspiring one another
- Children absorb what they see and as such the environment is designed for order, beauty, an
appreciation of nature, social responsibility and intellectual development
- The outdoors constitute more than a playground. We call it an outdoor classroom, providing
the children with an environment to develop more social skills, an appreciation for and
participation in nature and art, and gross motor skills and confidence as they challenge
themselves.
"The first aim of the prepared environment is, as far as it is possible, to render the growing child
independent of the adult. "
