The child is his own teacher
In traditional education, the teacher is the focal point of the classroom. She directs the pace of the work,
determining what the children as a group will learn at virtually every point in time. In contrast, the
Montessori Method's focal point is the child. He determines what he needs to learn and how long it will take
him to learn it. The materials he/she uses are self-correcting.
The children work individually
There are children who must not be rushed through concepts, but be able to take their time until they have
attained true understanding. There are also those children who can move faster than typical children are
capable of moving. It is very important for them to do this to avoid the problems associated with an
under-stimulated mind. Each child is recognized in the Montessori classroom as an individual, and almost
all work is done individually. The method allows each child to be on his/her own time-table.
His motivation to work is Intrinsic
The Montessori child is absolutely delighted to learn simply for the pleasure of doing so. He does not need
external rewards/threats to motivate him to learn. He is not driven by competition or the need to get an "A"
on a test. He is developing in an environment where satisfaction from accomplishing the task and doing it
well is his reward.
He has freedom of choice
The Montessori child has freedom to choose what is necessary for his development. Children can work
where they are comfortable, move around and talk at will (yet do not disturb the work of others); Group
work is voluntary and negotiable They are not constrained by a chalkboard, an assigned seat or a
45-minute subject period.
The first instinct of most who are new to this method is the fear of what the child may do with such freedom.
It is liberty to develop, not liberty to be wild. There are ground rules to guide the child towards exercising
his freedom for his and the common good. It is worthy of note that no adult wishes to live in a society
devoid of choices and freewill.
