EDUCATION MANAGER

DEFINITION:
Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Education Manager develops and implements museum education programming for children and their schools, parents and caregivers, and communities. These include drop-in programs, classes and workshops, museum events, camp programs and access programs. The Education Manager assists the administrator in overseeing the exhibit galleries. The Education Manager is responsible for supervising volunteers. The Education Manager develops and implements community partnerships in the local education field and manages activities for regional and national museum collaborations. The education Manager designs and implements Access Programs for disadvantaged children in the museum and in their communities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Core Function – Education • Strategic Planning: working with the board of trustees and the executive Director to develop short and long term strategic plans to actualize the museum’s vision, mission and objectives.

• Research and Development: Leading the museum’s research and development initiatives. This includes liaising with tertiary institutions, government agencies and other stakeholders to investigate questions for the improvement and development of best practices for the museum’s target audience.

• Program Development: working with a team of educators to design programs to meet the needs of our learners – children, and those who care for/educate them. Develop and implement innovative, high-quality and fun, educational programs and events that are child-based, accessible to a wide audience, and reflect the mission of Mindscapes Children’s Museum.

• Exhibit sourcing/development: Work with museum’s administrator and exhibit creators/local fabrication team to create the exhibits/resources needed to meet the needs of our learners.

• Education: Provide leadership to staff and volunteers to implement the museum’s educational programs for families, schools and communities. Monitor and evaluate programs, making recommendations for program improvement.

The Museum
1. Help maintain strong relationships with the all stakeholders.
2. Support marketing and fundraising efforts
3. Attend staff meetings, workshops, and Museum related activities when required;
4. Perform related duties as assigned.

1. Use formal and informal networks to advance the museum’s mission and objectives.

2. Initiate growth and change in his/her intellectual and professional development, seeking out professional conferences, courses, and other opportunities to learn and through participation in in-service educational activities provided and supported by the Museum.

3. Model integrity, curiosity, responsibility, initiative, and respect for all persons, as well as an appreciation for racial and cultural diversity.

Reporting Relationships
Reports to Executive Director.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to the position.

2. Experience in educational leadership

3. Experience working with children ages 0–11 in child care, classroom, or informal education settings.
4. Experience working with at-risk and special needs audiences.
5. Experience providing adult education programming for parents, child care providers and
teachers.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Knowledge of childhood academic, social, and physical development.
2. Knowledge of children’s museums’ collective vision, values and methodologies.
3. Knowledge of proper English grammar and spelling, basic knowledge of mathematics
4. Good oral and written communication skills, good reading skills,
5. Ability to solve problems.
6. Ability to obtain, clarify and exchange information.
7. Ability to relate positively with all stakeholders.
8. Ability to organize and coordinate activities.
9. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people in a
multicultural setting.
10. Ability to participate as part of a team.
11. Ability to operate basic office equipment such as DVD players, televisions, projectors,
recorders and a personal computer

Other Qualifications/Requirements:
Weekend and evening work required.
