Infant-Toddler Marigold

At three years of age, the child has already laid the foundations of the human personality. The period from birth to three is that for forming the mind.
——Dr. Maria Montessori

The Discovery House Infant-Toddler community is a developmental program to meet the needs of children from 3 months to 3 years.

The program is NOT a crèche, daycare or a baby-sitting environment. While Montessori programs provide care in a safe and healthy way, we facilitate learning and development.

THE MARIGOLD EFFECT

Many experienced gardeners follow a concept called companion planting: placing certain vegetables and plants near each other to improve growth for one or both plants. For example, rose growers plant garlic near their roses because it repels bugs and prevents fungal diseases.Among companion plants, the marigold is one of the best: It protects a wide variety of plants from pests and harmful weeds. If you plant a marigold beside most any garden vegetable, that vegetable will grow big and strong and healthy, protected and encouraged by its marigold.

Our Program

Our Marigold program is a “playgroup” for infants/toddlers and their primary caregiver, and is an alternative to having your child fully enrolled at Discovery House. It is designed to assist you as you nurture your infant or toddler’s mental, physical, emotional and social development, within the comfort of your home. The group meets weekly in a very nurturing and safe to explore environment for your child, and is facilitated by a Montessori trained guide and an assistant.
For over 14 years we have nurtured the development and education of children from the ages of 3 months to 12 years. We are equipped to walk alongside you in your child’s journey of learning and wholesome development. Our program will equip you with the knowledge needed to help your child develop the right skills, become independent, and grow up to lead healthy and successful lives.

Program Implementation:

The immediate environment has an important role to play in a child’s development and its impact can last a lifetime. We work with you to lay a good foundation for the wholesome development of your child, in your home. We guide you to design your home’s spaces as a safe space for learning and wholesome development.
Scheduled home visits to get one on one interaction with your child and observe him/her in your environment. This will also include collaborations with the parent to review the child’s developmental milestones and ensure the space design continues to support the child’s emerging needs.
Community meetings once a week. This allows your family to “play” with other families in a typical Montessori classroom for your child’s age, allowing your child to explore in an environment prepared for groups. The meeting will also include discussions of parenting topics.
(This will be done virtually for now due to COVID-19 restrictions)
Conferencing – You document your child’s activities and development in your environment at home ( in text, photos or videos) and share with the Montessori Guide using our child record keeping portal online. You and the Guide have scheduled conferences to discuss your child’s growth, provide tips and update the environment as needed

Does the education of the young child really matter?

Do the early years really make a difference?

A very good but brief answer is here extracted from a study done by the University of Maine, USA:
The human brain begins forming early in prenatal life, but in many ways brain development is a life-long project. The major difference between brain development in a child versus learning as an adult is a matter of degree: the brain is far more impressionable in early life than in maturity. This has both a positive and a negative side.
On the positive side it means that young children’s minds are more open to learning and enriching influences. On the negative side, it also means that young children’s brains are more vulnerable to developmental problems should their environment prove especially impoverished or un-nurturing.
